Currently the Water Proof Laminate (WPL) flooring sales continue to grow at a very fast pace. It is a great solution for areas in the home, or commercially that could get wet from time to time.
One of my previous blogs named IS WATER PROOF LAMINATE FLOORING FOR ME? talked about the benefits and cautions of water proof laminate.
What we are experiencing in the installation field is a small number of WPL jobs being effected negatively by direct sunlight and expanding when they get hot. This is because they are made of forms of plastic therfore hot and cold seem to be the main factors determining expansion and contraction. Unlike traditional laminates that expand and contract with humidity.
Although the manufactures do note a warning about these factors, it seems to be a larger problem with some product brands or styles than others. Some have expanded so far in what I would call normal sun light (through a open slider window) that the flooring has separated at the clicking system. This seam to be isolated to the thiner products from what I have heard so far.
This is a concern and I am sure the flooring industry will be making changes and adjustments in the near future as they learn more themselves.
My advise would be as a salesperson or a customer is to talk about this issue when shopping and be sure the best floor for your project is being installed. Again this is a small number of issues for the large number of jobs being installed.
If you have a concern beyond what you are comfortable with you can always go back to the tried and true laminate flooring with high density fiber board backing. These have been around for decades and work well in kitchens, living rooms, and high traffic areas or even commercially. The styles and colors available are the same new looks you see in WPL.
If you have any questions or feedback on this or any other flooring, please contact me or leave a response. I look forward to hearing from you.
